Ninilchik! The New Halibut Capital of Alaska!

 IMG_4853

Halibut! It is my favorite fish in the freezer. We have caught halibut in Seward, Homer and Juneau… but the new “hot spot” for catching a nice sized halibut is the tiny little hamlet of Ninilichik.

With just over 800 residents, this little spot on the map is well known for the charming Russian Orthodox Church, built in 1901, that overlooks the water about 44 miles North of Homer (188 miles South of Anchorage by road). Local sportsmen “in the know” are spending their budgeted charter bucks for a boat out of the small harbor there. You can also fish for salmon from Ninilichik and, on those low tide days, dig for Pacific Razor Clams.

While you enjoy the spectacular views of some of the prominent mountains in the Aleutian Range… most notably the “A.I.R.S.” volcanoes, a local acronym for, Mount Augustine, Iliamna, Redoubt & Spur, all active volcanoes.
